Before Surgery

  • You will be asked to stop the following medications prior to your surgical date:

    Blood thinners

    • ASA (Aspirin) - 7 days

    • clopidogrel (Plavix) - 5 days

    • abixaban (Eliquis) - 2 days

    • rivaroxaban (Xarelto) - 2 days

    • edoxaban (Lixiana) - 2 days

    • dabigatran (Pradaxa) - 2 days

    • coumadin (Warfarin) - please check with the office (dates can vary)

    Diabetes

    • Insulin - Morning of surgery

    • empagliflozin (Jardiance) - 3 days

    • semaglutide injection (Ozempic) - 2 weeks

    • semaglutide oral (Rybelsus) - 2 weeks

    ** Please check with the office (or surgeon) for when you should restart your medications **

  • If you require blood work, your tests will occur 7-10 days before surgery, and our office will remind you. Blood work can be completed at your nearby laboratory.

    • Bracebridge - Dynacare (55 Hwy 118, Unit 4)

    • Parry Sound - Dynacare (8 Albert St.)

    • Haliburton - Lifelabs (7217 Gelert Rd)

    **Cystoscopy patients do not require blood work prior to their procedure**

  • The following test may be requested prior to your surgery. The office will notify you and provide the necessary paperwork if required.

    • ECG - completed at a nearby laboratory (Dynacare, Lifelabs)

  • If your procedure will involve a general anesthetic or regional (spinal) anesthetic, you will be required to fast before your procedure.

    • Do not consume any solid food in the 8 hours before surgery.

    • Do not drink any liquids in the 6 hours before surgery

    If your procedure will involve a local anesthetic, you will NOT be required to fast before your procedure

    ** Failure to follow the fasting guidelines may result in the cancellation of your surgery **

Day of Surgery

  • All urologic procedures are performed at the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital located in Bracebridge at 75 Ann Street.

    • Health card

    • List of all medications

    • List of all allergies

    • CPAP device (Only if you have obstructivesleep apnea and use a CPAP device at home)

    • Overnight bag if staying overnight (for more info about overnight stays, click HERE)

  • All patients undergoing a general or regional anesthetic will require a ride home and someone to stay with you overnight. Transportation will need to be arranged before surgery begins. Your surgery may be cancelled if you are unable to confirm that you have a ride home.

    Cystoscopy patients do not require a ride and may drive themselves.

After Surgery

What do I need to do after surgery?

  • Follow the post-surgery instructions provided to you.

  • Don’t forget to restart your medications. Confirm with your Urologist when to restart your medications.
